HOLLYWOOD director Ridley Scott is planning to bring Gladiator hero Maximus back from the dead.

Film fans have been clamouring for a sequel ever since the credits started to role on the 2000 epic.

But with Russell Crowe’s character general Maximus dying at the end of the film, Scott has been struggling with a plot for the follow-up.

He said: “I will probably do a sequel to Gladiator.

“The only problem is Russell Crowe was such a powerful presence and, of course, Maximus dies at the end.

“We’ll have to get Russell back somehow.”

The film, which won five Oscars including a Best Actor Academy Award for 42-yearold Crowe, ended with Maximus being stabbed and collapsing on the bloody sands of ancient Rome’s Colosseum.

Rumours first surfaced that a sequel was in the works three years ago, but it was eventually abandoned with writers unable to come up with a convincing way to breath life back into Crowe’s character.

But with the film taking E350million at box offices around the globe, the incentive to make a money-spinning follow-up was always going to be hard to resist, regardless of the problems.

Scott, 68, who also directed Kingdom of Heaven, Black Hawk Down and Alien, is currently filming crime thriller American Gangster with Crowe, due for release next year.

In the meantime, Crowe has four other movies in the works, including a remake of cowboy classic 3.10 To Yuma and the political drama The Prince of Providence.
